Why are floral wreaths placed on graves?

Placing a wreath on a grave is part of an ancient belief it was
necessary to provide comforts for the dead and give them gifts in
order for their spirits to not haunt the mourners. The circular
arrangement represents a magic circle which is supposed to keep
the spirit within its bounds.
