Why does heat lightning always seem so far away?

Heat lightning is actually distant lightning produced by an electrical storm too far away to be seen by the viewer.  Actually, what you see is the diffused reflection of this lightning on clouds. You don't actually hear the thunder because you would be too far away for the sound to be audible.
