Seeing as how this is Saturday, I thought this one would be
appropriate. Why is there a "Best Man" in a wedding?

A long time ago, when young men went to neighboring villages for their
wives-to-be, it was not unusual for a young man to encounter heavy
resistance from the girl's relatives or perhaps other suitors.

To help overcome this resistance, it was customary to take a strong and
faithful friend. It was the friend's job to help ward off attackers
during the abduction and stand guard by the couple during the wedding.
This friend became known as the groom's best man.
