A large Portugese settlement with approximately 500,000 residents has
had some of the finest Portugese architecture for over four centuries,
yet only 20 percent of this settlement speak Portugese. What settlement
are we talking about here?

The Portugese city of Macao (or Macau). It is not in Portugal, but is
actually forty miles west of Hong Kong. Approximately 75 percent of its
residents are Chinese. While the streets have Portugese names, they are
known only by their Chinese names. On December 20, 1999, Macao will
revert back to Chinese control.
