Where on Earth should you be to be the first to see the year 2000 begin? Gisborne, New Zealand, says it will be the first city to ring in
the new year. But the real answer is that it would be a place near the 180th meridian, just west of the International Date
Line. Other locations along that line include Kiribati, the Caroline Islands and Fiji. Of
course, the British contend Greenwich, England, home of the prime meridian, the degree line
from which longitude east and west is measured, is the first place to greet 2000. |
