While the night sky may appear to be full of stars, there are
really only about 3,000 stars visible to the naked eye. They can
be seen without a telescope as they are either close to the Earth
or extremely luminous.

The closest star to Earth, not counting the sun, is Alpha
Centauri. It is about 25 trillion miles, or 4.3 light years,
away.
