Why is Washington, DC located where it is?

George Washington wanted to shorten his commute. Washington, by
profession a surveyer, was told by Congress to pick a spot between the
headwaters of the Potomac and its juncture with the Anacostia River.
Washington picked the closest site to Mount Vernon (his home)...even
though it was a swamp.
