Who invented the crossword puzzle?

Arthur Wynne did what he called a "Word-Cross" in the New York World
newspaper in 1913...adapting older word puzzles that were smaller and
less interesting. Wynne's first puzzle was symmetrical and used numbers
to mark certain boxes...just like now.
